Tuakana Room

The growing autonomy and increased social skills of our Tuakana tamariki, sees them actively engaging with art and creativity, role play, construction, excursions, gardening, home care, climbing, sand play and many more curiosities.

The whole room comes together for dining and using this time to share experiences and learning.

We use many home sized facilities, bathroom, tables and lounge furniture here, as well as real items to engage with that reflect everyday life. Finding resources in second hand shops, rather than straight from a catalogue mean children play with real tea sets, pots, pans, dressups, rather than plastic replicas. We love loose parts, such as planks, cogs, tree stumps, old tyres and fabrics to build with. They are real, intersting and exciting. We love to bring nature to life through exploring bugs, plants, shells, stones, flowers, etc. All found, collected and available for children to explore.

Tuakana children learn to feel comfortable, safe and able to explore in a real word. Our Tuakana tamariki look out for our Teina tamariki. They are their role models.
